I was very lucky to attend the Big 4 festival in Indio, CA last Saturday. I had a flight from San Jose to LA and then I had a shuttle that took us to the venue. Unfortunately, for now this was the only Big 4 event in USA, so there are a lot of people who were not able to see four pioneers of thrash metal together on one stage.
They opened the venue at 2pm… Long line on security check… And finally we’re there!
Anthrax started to rock at 4pm. They played 10 songs: Caught in a Mosh, Got the time, Madhouse, Among the Living, Antisocial (Trust cover), Indians, Fight ’em Till You Can’t, Metal Trashing Mad, A.I.R and I’m the Law.
Then, after the 30 minute brake Megadeth came on stage with twelve songs: Trust, In My Darkest Hour, Hangar 18, Wake up Dead, Poison was the Cure, She-Wolf, Sweating Bullets, Head Crusher, A Tout Le Monde, Symphony of Destruction, Peace Sells and Holy Wars.
Slayer performed 15 songs: World Painted Blood, Hate Worldwide, War Ensemble, Postmortem, Raining Blood, Black Magic, Dead Skin Mask, Silent Scream, The Antichrist, America, Payback, Seasons in the Abyss, Snuff, South of Heaven and Angel of Death. “America” is a new song, that I really liked, it was about the freedom and how expensive in may be (quote of Tom Araya).
After about 40 minutes Metallica started to rock the venue. They performed 17 songs, coming with a lot of pyrotechnic and fireworks. The first song was Creeping Death (was excited to hear this song live on Passover) , then came For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fuel, Ride the Lightning, Fade to Black, Cyanide, All Nightmare Long, Sad But True, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Orion, One, Master of Puppets, Blackened, Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman, Hit The Lights and Seek And Destroy. After the “Enter Sandman” they invited Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth and performed together the Diamond Head cover “Am I Evil?”.
I had an extremely great time being on this event. Despite on many sound problems, especially during the Megadeth performance, I still think it was worth the long trip I had. I wish, I could afford myself to book the VIP tickets in order to have a better access to the stage and to the drinks, but a lot of people even did not have what I had, so I should be thankful. I very hope the Big 4 will hit all the states to make all Metal Community happy. It would be awesome to release this concert as a limited edition vinyl set with posters and maybe some bootlegs and videos, I definitely would buy it and I’m sure, I would not be alone. For now, it’s possible to order The Big 4 concert recorded in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2010:
The DVD version is also available here.
I would also like to thank the Valley Music Travel for organizing the shuttles to the event. Everything wend well and in accordance to the scheduler, thanks guys!
