Interesting, how music we hear for the first time sounds very familiar to us. Sometimes it happens, because the composition includes some parts, riffs or whatever we already know; but in other cases it could happen because music just associates with some period of our life, for example, so it looks like it brings us back in time. Exactly such feeling came to me when I listened to a very interesting work of one of Californian young bands from LA called Feast of Fetus. The album is titled Animals in Falsetto released on July 30 2013.
Occasionally life unexpectedly gives us surprises, which happened to me in December 2013, when I got an email from Jess Cron – the lead singer and guitarist (acoustic/bass); the composer and author of almost all lyrics; the producer of the album. Jess sent me a limited edition vinyl record, I would even say very limited, because only 200 copies were issued. As you can see from the picture below, mine is number 55:
Unfortunately, I was not able to listen to the album right away, because I was on vacation, but when I did, the music brought me tons of memories from the mid eighties, when I was a teenager and was into a Russian Rock, which was in some cases very close to the genre Feast of Fetus work, in terms of music and in terms of lyrics. For the ones of you who are familiar with Russian Rock, I could say that the first band name came into my mind was Aquarium, especially when I heard the fourth track of the album titled “Testings”, which by the way became my favorite one.
The most important and valuable facts of the album is that you do not feel yourself bored, not for a second. Music is very different, which consists of elements of punk and post-punk; folk rock and even metal. When it comes to the lyrics, they do not leave you even a single chance to disconnect. I would say, that the most important element of the lyrics is a huge sense of humor, and that’s exactly what I like. So, during the whole listening, you feel yourself like in a theater, which is indirectly confirmed by the authors, who refer to the LP side as “Act”:
So, as you can see, the album comes on a single white 12″ LP recorded at 33 rpm. I like that color, because it contrasts with my black turntable. Both sleeves , external and internal, illustrated in black and white colors:
The album contains eleven tracks, five at the first act, and six at the second one. My favorite songs are: “Cat Mascara”, “Tastings”, “Bunk Beds”, “Salmon of Knowledge”, “Leavings” and “The Gilded Narwhal”. Last two I mentioned are overlapped; they are very relaxing, maybe also because you can hear the ocean which made me literally feel like I’m lying on a cool seashore sand with a bottle of cold beer, listening to waves melody… Well, the cold beer was not an imagination, I really had it in my hand.
Overall I really enjoyed listening to the record. Here is the album sample:
I also prepared a short video, which will give you an indication on how the record sounds like. Very hope you like it. Enjoy!
