Being a bit more busy than usually last year is not an excuse for not showing one of the greatest Metal releases of 2013. I’m talking about 14th studio album from one of my favorite German Heavy Metal bands – U.D.O.
The album was recorded with two new guitarists: Andrey Smirnov and Kasperi Heikkinen. They both came to replace Stefan Kaufmann and Igor Gianola. Stefan played drums in Accept, then joined U.D.O in 1996 as a guitar player. Igor was in the band since 1998. I was able to saw that lineup in Tel Aviv in 2005(?), I think, and they literally kicked ass rocking on stage for about two hours. For me Accept was the band which triggered my Metal life; and Udo Dirkschneider is my first favorite Metal vocalist.
Though Stefan did not participate in Steelhammer recording as a guitar player, he contributed as a producer of the album, which I find very successful.
The album comes on two yellow 33 rpm vinyls and contains 14 songs, but this particular record has one bonus track titled “Shadows Come Alive”, which is among of my favorites. I also really like “A Cry Of A Nation”, “Metal Machine“, “King Of Mean”, “Never Cross My Way”, “When Love Becomes A Lie” and the final composition “Book Of Faith”, especially its last part.
The design is made in accordance to the classic Metal traditions – leather jacket, metal rivets, skeleton rings…
Below there is a short video I made, a medley which fully indicates the record design and sound. Very hope, U.D.O. will make a US Steelhammer tour and I’ll have a chance to interview Herr Udo. Can’t wait to hear your opinion about the album.
